New York Arrival

New York Arrival

Now I understand why you flashed
Such dark flames at me in your glances,
O eyes!--
As if you wished to gather up
All your strength into a single look.
But I did not suspect, for mists woven
by
Deceiving destiny enveloped me,
That this beam was already turned
homewards,
To the source of all beams.

You wanted to tell me with your light:
"We would love to stay with you,
But Fate will not allow us.
Look at us now, for soon we shall be far
away from you!
These which now are just eyes to you,
In nights to come will be but stars to
you."

from Kindertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler
